The Big Catch was inspired by a 1909 photo from Ashael Curtis--one of the great documentarian photographers of in Pacific Northwest history. The statue was gifted to the History Museum in Gig Harbor as a symbol of the strength of, and in tribute to, the countless families who have come from all over the world to pursue the magnificent salmon, bringing with them the skills and courage to fulfill their dreams.
We want the lines and wrinkles and hollows, the human face is as boundless as the oceans this man sailed upon. It is my wish to capture to catch the often impenetrable mysteries of this man, of all men, to snatch this moment from history and yield up his very real life.
"The Big Catch" bronze statue is part of a revitalization effort in the Gig Harbor community to embrace their fishing past and honor their fishing community.
